I just learned from Ronnie Mangubat , one of my batch mates from the Street Strategists Financial literacy seminar Batch 16 that the University of Asia & the Pacific in cooperation with the UA&P Alumni Association will be conducting a “Mid-year economic briefing on the Philippine economy: In Recess or in Recession” This briefing will be somewhat helpful to those who are in business and those who are functioning as business plan consultant since this will give us a glimpse of what we can expect for the next year or so. Although economic briefings are just forecast and sometimes if not most of the times, some economic forecast will be far from what is actual happening, knowing what some economist thinks might be of actual help. If you are also new to exploring the world of business, finance, economics and even the stock market, you might also be interested in listening to this as the more you will be exposed to this kind of stuff, the more you will learn. The event will be … [Read more...]
Guerilla Blogger’s take on President Arroyo’s 2009 State of the Nation Address
Whew times flies so fast ! It was just one year ago, July 28, 2009 when President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo gave the 2008 State of the Nation Address. This coming Monday, July 27, 2009, our President will again give her annual State of the Nation address or better known as SONA 2009. This I believe the 2009 State of the Nation Address is one of the most important, considering that it will be her last one. Well it remains to be seen if it will be her last one as only the president knows what her real intentions are. (Anti-adminstration camps always insist that the President hopes to remain in power and in order to achieve this they will do this by cha-cha or charter change through a con-con or constituent assembly) As far I am concerned, she gave her word that there will be an election on 2010. But mind you she never said unequivocally that she would neither run for any elective post nor did she say anything about being nominated as prime minister. Did I just catch the paranoia … [Read more...]
What I learned from Michael Jackson’s last moon walk
I’ve been contemplating on writing about Michael Jackson ever since the famous singer passed away simply because his death was the buzz of the blogsphere and was headline news all over the world. It seems that I can’t seem to find anything to write about him because I am really not a fan. However I do respect the man’s contribution to the world of music. Michael Jackson is known for his famous moon walk, a dance step that he popularized and is defined by Wikipedia as “a dance technique that presents the illusion of the dancer being pulled backwards while attempting to walk forward.” I pondered upon this definition and realized that the death of Michael Jackson and his famous moon walk could teach us lessons in life. This post is not intended as a put down of the King of pop, rather this post focuses on the lessons that we can learn from Michael Jackson and his last moon walk. Michael Jackson is considered as the most successful entertainer of all times. Having sold over 750 … [Read more...]
Free seminar on Introduction to Financial statements
If you want to invest in the stock market like Warren Buffett or learn how to do value investing properly, you must learn how to understand a company’s financial statement. You don’t need to have an accounting degree to understand financial statements. All you need is the willingness to learn. Don’t even worry if you are not good in math, besides prominent value investor Peter Lynch once said “Everyone has the brainpower to follow the stock market. If you made it through fifth-grade math, you can do it.” If you want to have a free web directory introductory lecture on financial statements you might want to attend the Street Strategist’s free seminar on Introduction to Financial statements. I’m teaching business law at the Cebu Institute of Technology. Currently we are now tackling the Corporation code. I believe that students can learn more if we apply theory into actual practice that is why I usually relate my discussions on the corporation code to publicly listed companies … [Read more...]
Guerilla Blogger meets the Street Strategist
In my bid to become a better value investor and to be more equipped in our business, together with one of my managers and one of my staff we attended a two day “Financial literacy-accounting for non-accountants” seminar last July 15 and 16 2009 conducted by the Street Strategist and held at the Holiday Plaza hotel. The Street Strategist is no other than the famous Thads Bentulan perhaps one of the greatest minds of the 21st century. Thads has a degree in engineering and an MBA from the prestigious Asian Institute of Management. He is famous for his “out of the box” thinking on very interesting topics. He currently anchors a radio program every 9 p.m. from Mondays to Friday in station DYAB, ABS-CBN Cebu. The program is called “Side walk 1512” where he talks about business, finance and economics. On Saturdays he hosts a very controversial radio program. (Try listening to it if you want to know what it is all about:-) ). His “hyperwage theory” has caused quite a stir not only in Cebu but … [Read more...]
