About three days ago the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 as a “pandemic.” COVID-19, officially also known as the “NOVEL CORONA VIRUS” (nCoV) and Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) , was detected in the late 2019 rapidly spreading in provinces in China and later on spreading to the rest of the world. As a response just a few days ago, our very own President Rodrigo Duterte, proclaimed proclamation 922 declaring a state of public health emergency throughout the Philippines in accordance with Republic Act 11332. As of the time of this writing Metro Manila has been placed under “Community Quarantine.” Other jurisdictions also made their own local proclamations and provinces and cities all across the country also imposed their own “Community Quarantine.” Since as announced by the President, “Community Quarantine” involves the prevention of “mass gatherings” which of course includes church services, several churches in Metro Manila have … [Read more...]
Response to KJV onlyist arguments on 2 Corinthians 2:17
KJV Onlyists often spins out memes and various short posters to spread their disinformation, conspiracy theories, half truths and lies in the internet more particularly in social media and being an active internet user I often come across them.
The particular text in dispute here is 2 Corinthians 2:17 wherein it is alleged that the NKJV "Hides Bible Corruption." Here's the meme and below is my response to it.
The meme should be entitled “KJV ONLYISTS HIDES AND CORRUPTS THE REAL TRUTH AND SPINS CONSPIRACY THEORY INSTEAD THAT MODERN TRANSLATION CORRUPTS SCRIPTURES”
On the contrary, the KJV did not actually fully capture what the underlying Greek text is actually saying.
The Greek word translated by the KJV as "corrupt" is actually the word "kapēleuontes" which in reality is best translated as "peddle for profit." Ronald Trail in the SIL Exegetical commentary writes how the translations translate such word, "pres. act. participle of καπηλεύω (LN 57.202) (BAGD p. 403): … [Read more...]
Response to KJV onlyist arguments on 1 Corinthians 14:38
This is the first of my series of articles devoted to debunking the claims of several well known KJV Onlyists actively promoting their false man made doctrine of KJV Onlyism. In particular this is response to the article written by Will Kinney in his website https://brandplucked.webs.com. In there he wrote an article entitled: “1 Corinthians 14:38 - the Farce they call the "science" of Textual Criticism. ” Kinney and I has constantly been interacting in an online forum on his position on KJV Onlyism. I will not copy paste the entire article here, you could just check it out in his website. In summary it is his usual rant that only the KJV (and other Textus Receptus Bibles) got the translation of 1 Cor. 14:38 right and that all other modern translations are wrong. As he always does, he further promotes his “modern Bible versions – Roman Catholic conspiracy theory,” insisting that the mistranslation of modern translations is deliberately done in order to corrupt God’s … [Read more...]
High Yield Investment scams in the Philippines from a legal, theological, business, investment and economic perspective – Part 2
Last time in part 1, I tackled comprehensively why certain high yield investment schemes has been flagged as scams by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) base on what the law says about this. In part two of this three-part series I will discuss the theological perspective of this issue. Why a theological aspect? While the primary motivation for joining this high yield investment schemes is primarily monetary gain, a theological perspective is needed considering that some of these schemes are perpetuated by pastors of certain religious groups and a lot of pastors are actively involved in recruiting their members to join these dubious schemes. Probably part of the reason why these scams proliferated so easily is because of the fact that pastors exercise influence over their members. Since pastors who got themselves in these illegal schemes use Scripture to justify what they are doing, as a theologian let me also quote Scripture so that we can see what it really says … [Read more...]
A logical analysis of Bill Pratt’s article entitled “Is God subject to logic ?”
Sometime in September of 2010, Christian apologist, Bill Pratt wrote an article entitled "Is God subject to logic." Bill Pratt has a Masters Degree in Christian Apologetics from Southern Evangelical Seminary. He speak about apologetics at Cornerstone Baptist Church, in Greensboro, North Carolina, U.S.A and blogs about Apologetics at "Tough Question answered." (Where he tackles heavy apologetical issues) This article is an evaluation and an analysis of the above mentioned article he has written. As a student of Apologetics wherein logic is considered one of the things that we "major" on, I will attempt here to dissect his arguments and try to analyse from a logical standpoint if he made a good argument with regards to his position on the issue. In trying to answer the question, “Is God subject to Logic ?,†the author presents several arguments and conclusions. I will try to break down each and analyze how the author builds his arguments to reach his final conclusion and how … [Read more...]
