Solving Asia’s Poverty Problem – Part 4
This is the last part of my essay on Solving Asia's Poverty problem my official entry to the Time Magazine essay writing contest. For the other parts, click here for Part 1, Part2 and Part 3. Now we continue with part 4 of this essay. Now the solution might sound crazy for being too obvious but empowering people by giving them real purchasing power such that their consumption will place them above the poverty line seems to be the only variable in the multidimensional problem wherein we can really make a big difference. Consider this, the one thing that first world countries have as compared to third world countries is bigger domestic consumption. This is made possible because of a larger middle class. First world countries have a large middle class because they have higher wages, in contrast third world countries have a little or no middle class because wages are low. Support and sponsor a child in the Philippines
A family strives to survive to provide a better and satisfying life. The father, as the breadwinner, earns less in carpentry to support the needs of the family. The mother, a housewife, tries to find a job to sustain their financial needs. Working as a house helper is the only means of getting employed. They are renting in a small room. They do not have electricity and they get water from the well. The family depends much on the father’s income. What he earns is spent on their basic necessities and that alone could not send their four children to school. Two of the children were able to study until grade two. The eldest, sixteen, is helping his father in carpentry. While the second child, aged eleven, stopped schooling due to inability of parents to pay her school fees. The two younger ones, ages nine and six have not studied yet. The children shows interest to go to school but their parents could not afford their school expenses. Will Korea go to war?
The world's eyes are now fastened on the Korean Peninsula as the two Koreas, North and South Korea, is determined to make history. As to whether this will result to a third world war, a regional instability brought about by a war or it ending in a peaceful resolution of the conflict will be remain to be seen in the coming days. North Korea has been taunting South Korea and other countries for the past decades. For several years now North Korea has been accused of abducting Japanese and South Koreans alike. North Korea has been under repeated sanctions by the United Nations Security council, for developing nuclear weapons, weapons of mass destruction and continuing on their nuclear testing. Despite this the North Koreans won’t budge and continues to defy the world’s super powers. There seems to be a lot of indication that the tension between the two Koreas will escalate into a conflict. However it is important to focus our solution in Asia since Asia encompasses half of the world's population. Solving Asia’s poverty problem would help solve the poverty problem of the world. But what is the solution to the poverty problem? The United Nations, the World bank and various non-government organizations as well as governments all over the world has been trying to solve the poverty problem for several decades now.
