I didn’t get to blog about the “Donnie Nietes vs. Erik Ramirez youtube video” before the fight. I learned about this just recently. Anyway, the news is still fresh perhaps I can still get some traffic for this. Once again, the Philippine is proud because ALA gymn’s star fighter, WBO minimum weight king, Donnie Nietes successfully defended his title for the second time, this time against Mexican Erik Ramirez in Oaxaca, Mexico. Donnie Nietes knocked down the Mexican fighter four times making the judges score the bout at 115-109, 116-108 and 113-111 all in favor of Nietes. Called “Ahas” (snake) because he enters the ring bringing his pet snake with him, Donnie Nietes has improved his standing to 24-1-3, 14 KOs while Erik Ramirez who is ranked No. 2 by the WBO slid down to 25-6-1 with 19 knockouts. Boy I wish I had those boxer's well chiseled abs. Well got to take my weight loss pills to achieve it hehehehe. I have a previous post on Donnie Nietes’ previous fight. People seem … [Read more...]
Why the Amazon Kindle 2 sucks
I wrote about how Amazon’s Kindle will ““kindle” the fire of revolution in electronic cigarette reading” in the post entitled “The future of reading . . .The Amazon Kindle.” Last December 2008 in the post entitled “My Christmas wish list for December 2008” I wrote that I wanted to have an Amazon Kindle. Good thing, I didn’t get what I want because Amazon came up with a second generation device called the Amazon Kindle 2. The Amazon Kindle 2, is a huge improvement over the Amazon Kindle 1. It is much thinner at only 0.36 inches thick, about 25% thinner than an iPhone. The battery life is increased to 25 %. You can literally read for weeks without recharging. With over 16 shades of gray it has a much sharper display than Kindle 1’s 4. Although they ditched the SD card feature, the Kindle 2 has a much bigger memory. At 2 GB it can store up to 1,500 books at any given time. Want to look up the meaning of a word? No problem. Kindle 2 has bigger vocabulary with a 250,000 word … [Read more...]
Questions and answers on the Philippine stock exchange
I received a question in my post entitled “Applying value investing in the Philippine stock market” and I wrote such a long response to the comment that I decided to turn it into a blog post. The question is as follows: “Im still a student and ive been searching for philippine large-cap value stocks.. we have a project on constructing a financial portfolio just wanna ask if whats the best valuation method to determine if a stock is a value stock? and how are the phil stocks classified into large cap, or small cap? US has this $5 billion range ive been looking for that same sort of classification applicable to the phils . . .” - Enji My response is as follows: Dear Enji, It seems that you have two questions here. The first one is concerning classification by Market Capitalization in the Philippine stock exchange and secondly is with regards to the best valuation method to determine “value stocks” in the Philippine stock exchange. I do not dub myself as an expert, but let me … [Read more...]
My unfortunate flat tire changing experience
Of all the weird topics I want to share, you might be scratching your head and wondering why I am talking about a flat tire. Well, it was a beautiful Sunday afternoon and I was blogging, trying to make some money online when my wife interrupted me by telling me she wanted her flat tire changed. I reluctantly went out. I have changed a flat tire before and it was a no brainer. It was not as if I was changing Ferrari parts. I was so anxious to finish it because I wanted to finish my blogging and then go right to sleep because I wanted didn’t want to miss my afternoon nap. So I got the spare, positioned the jack, started using the lug nut wrench to get the lug nuts off. Silly me, instead of turning the lug nut wrench (We call it a “tire wrench” here) counterclockwise, I turned it clockwise and forced it with all my might. Suddenly, I heard a snap. It was then that I realized that I should have turned it counterclockwise. Unfortunately, I broke one of the bolts that held the tire in … [Read more...]
How to survive difficult times–Part 2
Some of you were anxious to get the second installment of my post entitled “How to survive difficult times – Part 1.” It is understandable that many of you wanted to read it considering that we are in such difficult times. So here is the second and last installment of this two-part post on how to survive difficult times. 4.) Don't panic – Warren Buffett, once wisely said, “Long ago, Sir Isaac Newton gave us three laws of motion, which were the work of genius. But Sir Isaac's talents didn't extend to investing: He lost a bundle in the South Sea Bubble, explaining later, 'I can calculate the movement of the stars, but not the madness of men.' If he had not been traumatized by this loss, Sir Isaac might well have gone on to discover the Fourth Law of Motion: For investors as a whole, returns decrease as motion increases.” I certainly agree ! Most investors bail out of the market upon the first sign of bad news or if the government fails them. They liquidate their positions even at a … [Read more...]
