Boxing loving Cebuanos will be in for a treat again tonight, Saturday, February 21, 2009 as veteran boxer Gerry “Fearless” Peñalosa who originally hails from San Carlos City, Negros Occidental (My wife’s birthplace) will take on a young Mexican fighter, German “Panteonero” Meraz in the fight dubbed as “Battle of the Bantam fighters” to be held at the Cebu City Coliseum.
People will be searching for the Gerry Peñalosa vs. German Meraz youtube video or the Gerry Peñalosa vs. German Meraz live streaming so I’ve decided to blog about this.
Gerry Peñalosa’s 53-6-2 with 36 KOs compared with the 22 year old Meraz’ 20-11-1 with 8 KOs may seem to show that the scale is tilted in favor of Gerry.
Gerry Peñalosa is an intelligent fighter, a very good defensive boxer and a counter-puncher and earned the respect of the famous Freddie Roach who calls Penalosa the “best technical boxer that ever came from the Philippines.” He has never been knocked down in his entire career. The “Fearless” is a two-division champion and currently holds the WBO bantamweight title.
On the other hand German “Panteonero” Meraz is the former Mexican Pacific Coast flyweight champion whose monicker means “somebody who handles tombs in the cemetery.”
Most boxing analyst say that the Gerry Peñalosa vs. German Meraz is just a tune up fight for Gerry Peñalosa’s April 24 fight against the sensational Juan Manuel Lopez of Puerto Rico.
But despite the scales tilted highly in favor of Peñalosa, the “Fearless” should not take chances because the “Panteonero” might just send him to his boxing grave. Anyway Peñalosa promised to give Cebuanos a good show tonight; I guess I will just have to take his word for it.
Boy, I wish I had those boxer’s muscles and trimmed abs, perhaps a weight loss pill should do 🙂
